‘Star Wars’ and Real Wars: Meet the Military’s Real-Life AT-AT

Walking-TruckMeet what could be the great grandfather of the Imperial AT-AT walker: the Cybernetic Anthropomorphous Machine, or CAM, an experimental vehicle created by General Electric at the behest of the U.S. Army.

In the sixties the Army was looking for a next-generation vehicle that could take the fight to the enemy, no matter how rough the terrain, and took notice of a program that GE had started to develop what it then called a “walking truck”.

Working with military specifications, GE created the CAM was awarded a contract to begin manufacturing the units in 1966 – the same year the United States entered the Vietnam conflict. Unfortunately, operators of the CAM found its complex and delicate controls difficult, so the project was scrapped shortly thereafter.

Read more about the CAM and check out some retro-riffic photos at GE Reports.
