Del Rey Spectra 50 Page Fridays (Thank You! Edition): Terry Brooks and Aaron Allston

We here at the Fellowship Of Geekery are currently with family and friends enjoying the Thanksgiving recess, but no matter! The Fellowship shouted, “Let there be excerpts!”. And our excerpt machine (either to appease us or make sure we’d shut up) produced not one, but two! And from great books to boot! It’s our package deal for Black Friday, so to speak…alright let’s get to it.

Our first excerpt comes from the  urban fantasy Running With The Demon by fantasy legend Terry Brooks. Book one in Terry’s cult classic trilogy, The Word & The Void. I love Terry and I must say that this is a personal favorite of mine, I love this book. But don’t take my word for it – here’s what Terry’s editor Betsy Mitchell had to say about the book:

“Running with the Demon came as a complete surprise to me on first reading. I’d been familiar with Terry Brooks’s Shannara series, but I’d never known he could write contemporary fantasy, much less contemporary fantasy with such a dark tinge. Nest Freemark and her world drew me in and gripped me through the whole trilogy, which continues with A Knight of the Word and Angel Fire East.

So if you think Terry’s work is all druids, Elves, and Trolls, you owe it to yourself to try Running with the Demon.”

Out next excerpt comes from the first book in our current huge, epic, grandiose (you get the idea) Star Wars series: Fate Of The Jedi. Outcast, written by veteran Star Wars author Aaron Allston, sets the stage for a 9 book saga that is packed with action, suspense, drama within the Legacy era (40+ years after A New Hope) of the Star Wars Expanded Universe. Shelly Shapiro, our dedicated Star Wars editor, can not recommend this series enough:

“What happened AFTER Return Of The Jedi? AFTER the power of Darth Sidious and Darth Vader was broken and the young Luke, Han, and Leia were free to move on with their lives—and with their new knowledge of the Force and the power of love and freedom?

Many, many books tell the varied tales of our heroes’ adventures after the movies.  In the cleanup after the Rebellion, Luke started to rebuild the Jedi Order and met the love of his life, Mara Jade, whom he eventually married.  Han and Leia married, too, and had three children: the twins, Jaina and Jacen, and young Anakin.  Then, when the children were teenagers and Luke and Mara were expecting their first child, catastrophe struck: in the form of the Yuuzhan Vong, deadly alien invaders from another galaxy.

The war took a huge toll on the Star Wars galaxy before the invaders were finally defeated, and the Skywalker-Solo families suffered their own terrible tragedies: the deaths of Han’s partner, Chewbacca, and Han and Leia’s younger son, Anakin.  And, unbeknownst to them, it also planted the seeds of fear and doubt in their older son, Jacen, a powerful Jedi Knight who finally came to the conclusion that the only way to make the galaxy safe for his daughter was to take absolute control of it himself: as the Sith Lord Darth Caedus.  But the Sith way is one of deceit and evil, and Darth Caedus’s ways precipitated a galactic civil war the likes of which not seen since the war between the Rebel Allliance and the Empire.  And when the dust finally settled and peace was on the horizon, Darth Caedus was dead—at the hands of his twin sister, Jaina, the Sword of the Jedi.

Now a brand-new chapter has begun in Star Wars history.  Peace just might be possible, as the galaxy works to pick up the pieces.  And the Skywalkers and Solos can attempt to heal their wounds at last, as Luke and his son Ben set out to try and figure out what happened to Jacen to turn him to the dark side, Han and Leia take over the raising of their granddaughter, Allana, and Jaina resumes the life of an ordinary Jedi Knight and chooses a life partner at last.

But this is Star Wars, where the future is always in motion, and always clouded—and soon the Jedi will be tested as never before in a multigenerational saga of adventure and intrigue beginning with Star Wars: Fate of the Jedi: Outcast!”
