Nearly twenty years ago Bantam Spectra published Timothy Zahn’s Star Wars: Heir to the Empire, the first book in what is know commonly referred to as the Thrawn trilogy. The book was a revelation for Star Wars fans. After the release of Return the Jedi in 1983 there was very little to fill the void. This book picked up five years after the events of Jedi and continued the saga of our beloved heroes Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo. The book also introduced new characters that quickly grew in popularity, Grand Admiral Thrawn, the Emperor’s Hand Mara Jade, and Talon Karrde. The New York Times best selling book was followed by Dark Force Rising and The Last Command.
It’s five years after Return of the Jedi: the Rebel Alliance has destroyed the Death Star, defeated Darth Vader and the Emperor, and driven the remnants of the old Imperial Starfleet to a distant corner of the galaxy. Princess Leia and Han Solo are married and expecting Jedi twins. And Luke Skywalker has become the first in a long-awaited line of Jedi Knights.
But thousands of light-years away, the last of the Emperor’s warlords has taken command of the shattered Imperial fleet, readied it for war, and pointed it at the fragile heart of the New Republic. For this dark warrior has made two vital discoveries that could destroy everything the courageous men and women of the Rebel Alliance fought so hard to build. The explosive confrontation that results is a towering epic of action, invention, mystery, and spectacle on a galactic scale—in short, a story worthy of the name Star Wars.
Del Rey is now proud to be working on a very special twentieth anniversary edition of Heir to the Empire. Author Timothy Zahn is currently writing annotations to the novel that will be included throughout the book. In addition, he is writing a new short story featuring Grand Admiral Thrawn that will also be included in the book. Del Rey plans to publish the hardcover book in June 2011.
