Kevin Hearne On Voice & Star Wars: Heir to the Jedi

Author Kevin Hearne just wrapped up a tour for his new book, Shattered.

While at the University Bookstore in Seattle, WA, he talked about why he loves to write. It is a great reason. When he was younger, Kevin read One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey. It changed him forever. As the novel and its story unfolds, the book’s mentally ill point of view character Chief becomes well and, as observed on the written page, the reader knows that Chief is getting well because his use of language improves. It’s a wonderful literary technique, the voice—and how Kesey used it—being key to the novel’s success.

Kevin greatly admires Kesey for the deftness of writing craft he employed. Even now, after so long, Kesey gives Kevin inspiration in his own writing. He’s a very different writer from Kesey, of course. Kevin admits that fully. Yet developing a character’s voice on the page for the betterment of the overall story is what Kevin took from Kesey.

And we see that in his Iron Druid Chronicles, with wonderfully voiced characters like Atticus, Oberon, and the new Druid character, Owen Kennedy.

It begs the question then:

How has Kevin’s work on the Iron Druid Chronicles prepared him for quite possibly his biggest project to date: Star Wars: Heir to the Jedi?

For those of you who might not know, Kevin was asked to write one of the first new Star Wars novels after Diseny purchased Lucasfilm. It will be canon and sounds awesome! It is set after the events of A New Hope but before The Empire Strikes Back and is told from the point of view of Luke Skywalker, who truly takes his first steps into a much larger world with the Force. Oddly, readers have never been inside Luke Skywalker’s first person point of view before, making this an intriguing book in my opinion.

Since Kevin does first person so well, I have no doubt that’s why he was hired to write this very important book. Over the next few months, I will be talking to Kevin more about the book and how he went about writing it. For now though, know that I believe Kevin Hearne to be the perfect author to write Star Wars: Heir to the Jedi.

His past and understanding of voice has made him that perfect choice.

Star Wars: Heir to the Jedi by Kevin Hearne publishes on February 17, 2015!

May the Force be with you!
