RIP Star Wars Cinematographer Gilbert Taylor: Dead at 99


tumblr_m8ko6onWJF1rdzko8o1_500It has come to my attention that Star Wars cinematographer Gilbert Taylor passed away yesterday at the age of 99. Just a reminder that the people who made Star Wars: A New Hope are getting older now, as are we all. Every time I watch the original trilogy Luke looks less like a grown-up and more like the “kid” that Han Solo keeps calling him.

To many, though, he will be best remembered for his contribution to the first Star Wars film, on which he worked under the auspices of director George Lucas.

“George avoided all meetings and contact with me from day one,” Taylor would later tell American Cinematographer magazine.

“So I read the extra-long script many times and made my own decisions as to how I would shoot the picture.”
