I resisted Angry Birds forever. I held strong until I got stuck at the mall with my wife and needed something to entertain myself while she searched for shoes. Thumbing through my iPhone produced few options: I had already listened to my favorite podcasts, had no eBooks to speak of, and my game collection was fairly sparse – much like it had been today. That’s when I did it: I downloaded Angry Birds. Those birds and their pig nemeses took over my life for a little while. I could hear the game in my sleep: Boing, b’kaaaaaah! Oink, oink, oink. I got over it, though, and I haven’t picked it up since.
However, I think I feel a relapse coming on, if what PC Magazine is reporting is true. Angry Birds creator Roxio is teasing what seems to be a Star Wars edition of my old, bad habit. Could it be?
Rovio today posted a cryptic tweet that teased: “Something huge is on the way.” The message included a “coming soon” hastag and a Tumblr link that featured a hooded bird clutching an animated lightsaber.
That Jedi-themed animation, of course, would suggest that a Star Wars version of the wildly popular mobile and Web game is in the works.
A shadowy, still image was posted to the Angry Birds Twitter feed on Thursday – nothing more than a hooded lump in the middle of a barely lit picture. The lightsaber was added today.
The company offered no details regarding what to expect, but instead instructed visitors to visit Times Square at 10 a.m. Eastern on Monday. Added hint: head to Toys R Us at 8 a.m. For what? Stay tuned.
I’m excited, but I’m also a little scared. Do you think the pigs will be Gammorean Guards? I’m too excited about this. Help me, Obi-Squawk, you’re my only hope.
