This week’s excerpt features a phenomenon that is near and dear to many of our hearts; Star Wars. The 34th anniversary of A NEW HOPE originally screening in theaters was earlier this week, so it only felt right to offer a Star Wars excerpt this week. That’s where it gets a little tricky…there are simply a vast number of Star Wars novels. The die-hard Star Wars fans have read most if not all of them, but what about the science fiction or fantasy fan who likes Star Wars but is not sure where to begin? Enter Del Rey Spectra editor David Pomerico…
“It’s probably easy for readers to see a Star Wars novel and think: Oh, that’s for someone else or There’s no way I’m going to be able to catch up with the all the books. Trust me—I was in the same boat. When I first started helping out with the Del Rey Star Wars publishing program, I was overwhelmed—the last time I had picked up a Star Wars novel was when there were probably only two dozen books in the entire series. Now there are almost two hundred novels.
Wow.
And yet, what I found when I got back into the books is that not only have the stories continued to be incredibly compelling, but the exploration of times outside that of the characters from the movies has created some highly original space…fantasy, I guess is what I’d call it. Even better—if you are intimidated—there are so many great entry points into the Star Wars universe that you can pick up a trilogy or stand-alone and not feel pressured to journey into a stack of two hundred tomes.
(Not that we’d mind if you went out and bought them all right now!)
I say all this because of today’s 50 Page Friday entry: Star Wars: Fatal Alliance. Based on the upcoming massively-multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG), Star Wars: The Old Republic, by BioWare and LucasArts, this is Star Wars like you haven’t experienced it before, delving deep into the pre-history of the galaxy with some characters—good and bad (and especially bad!)—that any fantasy fan will love.
The best part: it stands alone. You can read this novel and get a complete story. When you’re finished, you can then decide how much more you want to get into other books in the Star Wars library
